Clarence Thomas Just Doesn't Get It. Or Does He?

[Justice Thomas. And yes, one of these lucky ladies is his wife.]

Clarence Thomas, believe it or not, is still on the Supreme Court. I say this because he seems to live a groundhog-like existence, seemingly only popping up once every few years. Since being appointed to the Big Show back in 91' after that embarrassing spectacle of a confirmation hearing, Thomas hasn't done much to distinguish himself.

So, I was surprised to say the least when he popped up on 60 Minutes the other night. For what, might you ask? To shill a new book of course.

As if the whole pubic hair in a Coke and Long Dong Silver stuff wasn't bad enough, Thomas has remained steadfast in his opposition to affirmative action in employment and higher education. While making the media rounds on mostly conservative talk shows, he has espoused the same ole' shitty complaints about why these legal constructs are no longer needed, and why "black folks" just need to stop complaining and work harder. Negro please.

Like it or not, as any flip through the newspaper will show you, our country is still far from colorblind. AA isn't a handout, it's simply an opportunity for qualified minorities to get in the door and fail or succeed just like everyone else. I sincerely hope that someday we'll get beyond the need for it, but as long as there are millions of whites who are genuinely surprised that black people in a family restaurant can eat in a civilized manner, I'd say the quota system, love it or hate it, needs to stick around a bit longer.

Thomas of course sees no such need. Never mind the fact that he was only a US Court of Appeals judge for only one year before getting called up to the majors. In Thomas' colorblind world, pulling one up by one's bootstraps, digging in your heels and working hard is all that's needed to succeed. I'm sure he also thinks Barack Obama has a fair shot at the White House, and my Washington Wizards will be favorites to win the NBA Championship this year.

Clearly, this man dwells on his own planet.

Thurgood Thomas is crying inside.

I may cop this book (library of course) just to get some better insight into what goes so tragically wrong in a man's mind that a boy from tiny Pin Point, GA can grow to have such a perverted view of himself and his people.

I don't normally throw questions out to the peanut gallery, but let me know: in 2007, is Affirmative Action still necessary, or is Clarence Thomas actually right for once in his life?

Holla back in the comments.
