What's On AB's Ipod?: The Knux

Ya'll know I'm sorta on the "underground" tip when it comes to hip-hop. I don't care much for this whole "hipster rap" label that's been laid on music that's non-mainstream, but I suppose it's just today's version of the old "backpacker" genre of the 90's.

Anyways, on my iPod right now is The Knux. I'm probably a few weeks late with this (go ahead and remind me how late, Ciara), but I'm sorta feelin' this group. They're a pair of brothers from New Orleans who were displaced by Katrina and moved to LA. It's hard to really categorize their style as anything other than "different".

Their breakout single "Cappucino" is on some "hipster" stuff like The Cool Kids/Kidz In Da' Hall.

"Bang Bang" is definitely on the Outkast Love Below vibe.

I'm definitely feelin' "Fire", which is a 90's throwback of sorts when rappers made songs with chanted hooks and rumbling basslines.

That sounds like something my Negro College HBCU radio station played in the afternoons, and I mean that in the best way possible. Sure, it's an ode to sticky icky, but I can overlook that cause it's so damn fresh.

As with most editions of WOAI?, I don't promise you'll like this. But why not download the free Remind Me In 3 Days.. sampler and decide for yourself?
