Biggie isn't necessarily one of my alltime favorite rappers (see: Kane, Big Daddy) , but few can deny his contributions to the game. Last Monday, March 9th, marked the 12th anniversary of his untimely demise. Since tributes are a part of the hip hop game, it's no surprise a million and one "R.I.P to B.I.G." mixes dropped last week.
I've heard a million and one of them myself, but prolly the best of the batch (seriously, there are literally millions of them) is from DJ Wonder of The Shade45 Morning Show with Angela Yee, which I listen to on Sirius XM everyday on my commute from burb to burb. Seriously, this is the best morning show evar. If you don't have Sirius XM yet, you have no idea what you're missing.
Anyways, unlike the millions (seriously) of other mixes out there, DJ Wonder's strays from the usual "Greatest Hits" format and plays a bunch of unreleased material. These songs (ie: that legendary freestyle over Casual's "I Didn't Mean To" instrumental) won't be anything new to the Biggie enthusiast. But by playing many of B.I.G.'s freestyles and lesser known hits, mixed smoothly with the songs they sample, Wonder's tribute has a unique angle.
The highlight is listening to B.I.G. spit Lil' Kim's verses (which he of course wrote) from "Queen B*tch", complete with the infamous "got buffoons eating my ***** while I watch cartoons" [||] line is something even I'd never heard before though. That makes this excellent, and well-paced 30 minute mix worth the download by itself.
Quit readin' and throw this on your iPod pronto, Baby Baybaaaay!!!
