AB.com Guest Post - If You Can Read This Line, You're Smarter Than Your School Board President.

[Editor's Note: Commenter extraordinaire Shady Grady has the floor again today, and is back with the latest in the ongoing saga of Detroit Public Schools f***ery. Enjoy, and show our guest some love you-know-where.]

Haven't we all encountered people who are "Do as I say, not as I do" sort of folks?

Perhaps it's the uncle who likes to point out your weight gain but is carrying more than a few extra pounds of blubber himself. Or it might be the woman that can't stop yakking about the benefits of committed marriage but is seen clubbing with a different man not her husband every Saturday night. Or it could be the man that complains about bad treatment at work when it comes to assignments or promotions but who steadfastly refuses to adjust to changing technology or business practices. Or it might even be the local school board President, who is leading a fight against state control of local public schools but who can't write a coherent sentence to save his life.

Surely I jest, you must be thinking. How could a school board President, who surely must have a sterling college education, multiple degrees and years of experience with the written word, be a functional illiterate?

Well let's look at some excerpts, shall we:
Good Evening,

If you saw Sunday's Free Press that shown Robert Bobb the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools, move Mark Twain to Boynton which have three times the number seats then students and was one of the reason's he gave for closing school to many empty seats.

Based on the Free Press Map where it shows that the most of children who live in 48217 is near Gleason by the former Mark Twain. Why did Bobb think the larger numbers of our children would cross Fort St. to attend the Boynton school site calling it Mark Twain, make's no sense unless the plan is to destroy the public schools that's remained in our neighborhood. ….. When Bobb moved Mark Twain to Boynton, 48217 lose about 200 hundred students some of the student attended Mark Twain on Gleason came from out side the city of Detroit.
Or how about this one?
Do DPS control the Foundation or outside group? If an outside group control the foundation, then what is DPS Board row with selection of is director? Our we mixing DPS and None DPS row's, and who is the watch dog?
There's more, which you can read for yourself here.

Now even for a blogger that amount of written wreckage would be disturbing. But for the President of the Detroit School Board it's LAUGHABLE. And it's beyond pathetic for this man to be leading a fight to control the academic future of Detroit Public School students. It just doesn't make any sense-even for Detroit.

So how did this come to happen, I wondered? What went wrong in the system to allow this mushmouth to reach a position of authority? It started with Mr. Mathis being sent to special education in the fourth grade. Then he graduated high school with a GPA of 0.98. Then he attended Wayne State University[1] on a program for academically unqualified students.

I don't want to sound elitist or self-hating because I really don't think I am and don't intend to invite those sorts of responses here but if you are ACADEMICALLY UNQUALIFIED, what in God's name are you doing in college????

This man took FIFTEEN years to graduate from Wayne State University, in part because he could not pass an English proficiency exam. He only was allowed to graduate because the school dropped that requirement. I happen to remember that case and thinking at the time, what sort of person couldn't pass an English proficiency exam? I guess the answer is the future President of the Detroit School Board.

[Editor's Note: The newsguy is clearly mocking Otis Mathis during this segment. It ain't supposed to be funny, but it sorta is.]

Of course you can trust him, he can't read or write!!!!!

He has to accept anything you tell him at face value. What's he going to do, look something up?

I have some sympathy for Mr. Mathis. It sounds like he's had a tough road. I am not a great public speaker by any means so I would never take a job that required constant verbal communication. But if you can't write and can barely read, maybe President of the School Board is not the job for you. I don't want dumb kids thinking that they too can graduate with a 0.98 GPA and waltz into a job that pays well over 6 figures a year. If you are opposed to the state school takeover but have the communication skills of a smart German Shepherd, perhaps you ought to just keep your big mouth shut: or at least hire someone to dictate your emails…

Question: Have you known really stupid people at the top of your profession? I don't mean people you just disagreed with but folks that were OBJECTIVELY dumber than a box of rocks. Shouldn't the leaders of an organization be the exemplars of that institution's values? Should the School Board remove this man from the Presidency? Is this man dumber than the people that voted for him?

Does DPS leader's writing send wrong message? [DetroitNews]

[1] A local university that is inside the City of Detroit. Nice place with some smart people. At least that's what I used to think =)
