So much for that whole "New America" pipedream. 08' is barely a week old, and we've already got our first Imus, although this time the culprit is a comely young blonde instead of a crusty old one. Props to my man mrshadow for the link.
During their usual post-round banter as they wrapped up Day 2 at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, a second-year anchor on the Golf Channel Kelly Tilghman and cohort Nick Faldo discussed young players who could possibly challenge Tiger. Faldo, ever the joker, said perhaps the youngsters should "gang up (on Tiger) for a while." The pair laughed a bit before Tilghman responded by saying, "Lynch him in a back alley." The pair chuckled awkwardly before moving on.Yeah, the comment was completely absurd, but let's be honest: this is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things. Much like Imus, this occurred on a channel hardly frequented by black viewers. Hell, do they even offer The Golf Channel in black neighborhoods? Maybe it's sandwiched somewhere between Lifetime Movies for Women and The Redneck Shopping Network (QVC), but even a sports loving channel surfer like me couldn't tell you for sure.
The Golf Channel said it received a limited number of complaints regarding the comment.
Tilghman, realizing her faux pas, explained her comments during the final-round broadcast despite the possibility she could have swept the incident under the mat.
"I've reached out to Tiger to make an apology, and I've done the same with our viewers," Tilghman said.
"I can assure you that there was never any intention to offend anyone. I'm sorry for any misunderstanding."
Woods refused to even bother commenting, but I'm wondering if maybe he should.
After that oh-so-unfortunate "chicken and watermelon" comment by Fuzzy Zoeller a few years ago, Tiger did the same "it's no biggie" routine, and honestly, I haven't cared too much for dude ever since. I guess if it doesn't offend him, it shouldn't offend me either, but damn, does anything get under this guy's Cablinasian skin?
I'm sure that with his "political influence" on the wane, and the Jena Six an afterthought, Rebb'n Al will find a way to be offended as soon as this on hits his RSS reader. Don't say I didn't tell you so.
Question: Should Tiger Woods issue an H.S.D. to Ms. Tilghman? Should he be offended by this comment? Are you?
