Black White Or Other?: The 8-Year Old Assassin.

[Editor's Note: Yeah, another new feature. Okay, this isn't exactly an exclusive feature, seeing as how I am more or less ripping it off from some hip hop talk show I heard on Sirius satellite radio. Still, I'm claiming it as the first dude in the blogosphere. So there.]

Stereotypes are a way of life in America. We feed into them so readily that they take on a life of their own. But how well do you really know your racial stereotypes?

Our new feature: Black, White, Or Other? will list a particularly heinous crime/news story, with incriminating bits of info omitted for the sake of confidentiality. Your job is the guess whether the protagonist is black, white, or that everpresent "other" and to tell why you guessed how you did. The best guessplanation wins a week's supply of Cyber CapriSuns.

And yeah, you could prolly Google the news story to find out the race of the person, but what sorta loser does that? Seriously. Be a good sport. Don't cheat.

Is this racist? Sure, I guess so. Is it fun? Could be? Is there any real point? Prolly not, but hey, it's a d*mn blog, not network TV, what do you want? I got a Day Job, a wife, and two kids. Roll with it.

Anyways, here's today's entry...

An 8-year-old boy charged in the shooting deaths of his father and another man appeared in handcuffs at a court hearing, drawing tears from some in the audience. The judge slapped a gag order on the shocking case.

While friends and neighbors disputed a suggestion that the boy had been abused, the judge on Monday proclaimed the gag order necessary to prevent "loose-cannon pronouncements."

The boy - who has been charged as a juvenile with two counts of murder - sat restlessly next to his mother, fidgeting, tapping his fingers on the table, and swiveling and rocking in his chair. His mother declined to comment as she left the courthouse.

Much of the hearing focused on court-ordered mental health and competency evaluations of the boy. Judge Michael Roca gave defense attorneys until Friday to either find an expert to evaluate the boy's competency or to agree to one suggested by the prosecutors.

Defense attorney Benjamin Brewer also asked for access to the crime scene - a two-story home where police say the boy's father, {redacted}, a 29-year-old employee of a construction company, and his co-worker and roommate, {redacted}, 39, were shot with a .22-caliber rifle on Wednesday.
